Rare Bird Alert - August 25, 2023

This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for August 25, 2023.

The TUNDRA BEAN-GOOSE continued at north side of the Earvin Magic Johnson Recreation Area in Willowbrook through August 25.

Nine COMMON MERGANSERS were at Bouquet Reservoir on August 21.

Two SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS were along the lower Los Angeles River just above Willow Street on August 19.

A COMMON TERN was at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB (letter of permission required) on August 19 and two were at Lake Balboa in Van Nuys on August 21.  Three more were at Lake Palmdale (private) on August 21.

A nearly unprecedented major tropical storm, the remnants of hurricane Hilary, passed through the area on August 20.  The days following produced a remarkable eighteen WEDGE-RUMPED STORM-PETRELS and about seventy LEAST STORM-PETRELS at various inland locations including Castaic Lake and Lagoon, Quail Lake, Lake Palmdale, Lancaster Water Treatment Plant, Bouquet Reservoir and Bonelli Regional Park.  Most of these were found on August 21, with a few lingering for several days.  The last report of a WEDGE-RUMPED STORM-PETREL was on August 23 at Lake Palmdale.  Lake Palmdale also had four BLACK STORM-PETRELS on August 21.

Ballona Lagoon in Playa del Rey had up to seven YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS through August 20.

Two PURPLE MARTINS were at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas on August 23.

A LUCY’S WARBLER was on the west side of Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena on August 19.

Two SUMMER TANAGERS were in Griffith Park in the Old Zoo area on August 22.

A female type PAINTED BUNTING was along the lower Los Angeles River on August 19.  This bird was below Willow Street on the east side of the riverbed.
