This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for September 1, 2023.

The TUNDRA BEAN-GOOSE continued at north side of the Earvin Magic Johnson Recreation Area in Willowbrook through September 1.

A WHITE-WINGED DOVE was at Angels Gate Park in San Pedro on August 30.

A RED KNOT was along the Los Angeles River in the Sepulveda Basin in Van Nuys on August 31, but could not be refound.

BAIRD’S SANDPIPERS were at Malibu Lagoon through August 26 and at Dockweiler State Beach on August 29.

A SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS was on the Ballona Salt Pan in Playa del Rey on August 26.  Two BAIRD’S SANDPIPERS were here on August 27.

In a late report, south of San Clemente Island on August 22, two RED-BILLED TROPICBIRDS, two COOK’S PETRELS and a MASKED BOOBY were found.

A LUCY’S WARBLER was along the Los Angeles River in the Sepulveda Basin in Van Nuys on September 1 about 300 feet upstream from the Burbank Blvd. crossing. 

Another LUCY’S WARBLER was at La Mirada Creek Park on September 1 below Cordova and south of Imperial Highway.  Park on Fonseca Ave. and follow the ramp into the park to the area below the two churches.

A VIRGINIA’S WARBLER was at Stephen Sorensen Park in Lake Los Angeles on August 29.

A female type PAINTED BUNTING was along Woodley Creek in the Sepulveda Basin in Van Nuys on August 26.  It was about 300 feet north of the Los Angeles River in the creek bed.
