This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for January 27, 2023.
Up to five BLACK SCOTERS and two WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS were off Dockweiler State Beach in El Segundo through January 25. A LONG-TAILED DUCK was here on January 25.
One to two WHITE-WINGED DOVES were just west of Encanto Parkway in Duarte through January 27 near the intersection of Sagehurst Drive and Conata Street.
The SANDHILL CRANE at the Rio Hondo Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera continued through January 26. Enter at Mines Ave. and Paramount Blvd. and check the various basins for the bird. It has also been seen at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds at the opposite end of Mines Ave. along the San Gabriel River.
The PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER continued along lower Ballona Creek through January 26. It has been on the salt pan and along the creek channel, most recently between Lincoln and the 90 Freeway.
Three MOUNTAIN PLOVERS were in the east Antelope Valley southeast of 110th Street East and Ave. I on January 25.
Up to three LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS continued just below the spillway at the south end of Peck Road Water Conservation Park in Arcadia through January 23, one was along the lower Los Angeles River in Long Beach above the Willow Street crossing on January 21, one was at MacArthur Park through January 22 and one was at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas on January 26
NEOTROPIC CORMORANTS were at the Sepulveda Basin through January 26 and at Legg Lake in South El Monte through January 26.
A BROWN BOOBY was west of Palos Verdes on January 21 and another was in the Santa Catalina Channel on January 24.
ZONE-TAILED HAWKS were in Monrovia through January 21 and at Santa Fe Dam on January 23.
A NORTHERN “YELLOW-SHAFTED” FLICKER continued along the lower Los Angeles River below Willow Street in Long Beach through January 24. Others were reported at Madrona Marsh in Torrance and at the South Coast Botanic Garden in Rolling Hills on January 21.
The DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHER along the Los Angeles River near Lake Balboa continued through January 21. It has been at the south end of the riparian strip bordering the west side of the golf course. Google Earth 34.1775, -118.4925.
Two TROPICAL KINGBIRDS continued below the Willow Street crossing along the Los Angeles River in Long Beach through January 24 and in Area 3 of El Dorado Park in Long Beach through January 21.
A WESTERN KINGBIRD continued at Madrona Marsh in Torrance through January 26.
A HAMMOND’S FLYCATCHER continued by the small north shore pond at Bonelli Regional Park through January 22. Also in this area and along the north shore were a continuing SWAMP SPARROW and a BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER.
Another HAMMOND’S FLYCATCHER continued on the UCLA campus through January 20 and one was at Vina Vieja Park in Pasadena from January 22-25.
A PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHER and a BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK were at the William Andrews Clark Library in Los Angeles on January 25.
An EASTERN PHOEBE continued at Scherer Park in Long Beach through January 19.
A BELL’S VIREO was at Rio de Los Angeles Park along San Fernando Road from January 25-26.
A DARK-EYED “PINK-SIDED” JUNCO continued at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas in the Sailboat Cove area through January 26.
A GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE continued at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood through January 20 and another did likewise at the Dominguez Gap Wetlands in Long Beach through January 20.
A HOODED ORIOLE continued at the Huntington Gardens in San Marino (north end of the desert garden) through January 20.
BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS were at Hopkins Wilderness Park in Redondo Beach through January 20, along the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood through January 22, at the north end of the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera on January 22, at Burton Chace County Park (west of the Santa Monica Yacht Club building) on January 24 and at Cesar Chaves Park in Long Beach south of the playground on January 24.
The CAPE MAY WARBLER at Loyola Marymount University continued through January 23 in the area outside the Art Gallery. Google Earth 33.9687, -118.4167.
A PALM WARBLER continued along the lower Los Angeles below Avila Park in Long Beach through January 24.
The PAINTED REDSTART south of Birdcage Park in Long Beach at 3946 Hackett Ave. was reported through January 26. A CASSIN’S VIREO was here on January 25 and a TENNESSEE WARBLER was present from January 25-26.
Another PAINTED REDSTART continued by 1018 Wellesley Ave. near Brentwood through January 25.
SUMMER TANAGERS were along the Lower Arroyo Seco below San Rafael Ave. through January 20, at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas (two birds on the north shore) through January 21, at Colorado Lagoon in Long Beach on January 24, at Elysian Park on January 22 and at Cesar Chavez Park in Long Beach on January 25.
