This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for 21 October 2022.
The PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER along lower Ballona Creek continued above the Pacific Ave. bridge through October 16.
NEOTROPIC CORMORANTS were at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas and four birds were along the Los Angeles River in the Sepulveda Basin in Van Nuys on October 15. One was at nearby Lake Balboa on October 18 and another was along the Los Angeles River in Glendale at the Bette Davis Picnic Area from October 18-20.
Up to four YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS continued at Ballona Lagoon in Marina del Rey through October 16.
A TROPICAL KINGBIRD continued at Colorado Lagoon in Long Beach through October 16. Others were on Santa Catalina Island on October 15, in Area 3 of El Dorado Park in Long Beach through October 17 and at Santa Fe Dam in Irwindale on October 17.
An EASTERN PHOEBE was at the golf course in Avalon on Santa Catalina Island on October 19.
A WOOD WARBLER (first California record) was found at Willow Springs Park in Long Beach on October 15 and reported there through October 21. It has been by the southwest corner of the park, in the Sunnyside Cemetery and along the adjacent streets. Also at the park and cemetery were a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW on October 17, a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW from October 16-18, a PALM WARBLER from October 16-17 and a SUMMER TANAGER on October 17.
A GRAY CATBIRD was on San Clemente Island from October 19-20 and a SUMMER TANAGER and an INDIGO BUNTING were there on October 20.
Five CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPURS and a SPRAGUE’S PIPIT were in agricultural fields in the west Antelope Valley on October 19. Most of this land is private property. Bird from the road only.
Two GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS were at Malibu Creek State Park on October 15.
CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS were at Los Angeles Valley College in the San Fernando Valley on October 18 and continuing at Bonneli Regional Park in San Dimas through October 19.
A GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE was at Kenneth Hahn SRA on October 17 by the Japanese Garden.
BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS were at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB by Parking 1 through October 14, at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas (by the old and now closed north shore pier) through October 19, continuing at Madrona Marsh in Torrance through October 20 and continuing at Polliwog Park in Manhattan Beach through October 19.
TENNESSEE WARBLERS were at King Gillette Ranch near Calabasas on October 14, at Willow Springs Park on October 17 and at Neff Park in La Mirada on October 18.
An AMERICAN REDSTART continued at Silverlake Reservoir through October 15.
MAGNOLIA WARBLERS were at Jackson Lake near Wrightwood on October 16 and at La Mirada Creek Park from October 19-20 (in the area south of Imperial Highway). A BLACKPOLL WARBLER was also at the latter location from October 19-20.
A BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER was at Wardlow Park in Long Beach from October 19-21.
CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLERS were at Colorado Lagoon in Long Beach through October 20 (at the Will Rogers mini park), at Ken Malloy Harbor Regional Park in Harbor City (by the southwest part of the lake) on October 16 and at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB (letter of permission required for entry) through October 20.
A BLACK-TROATED BLUE WARBLER was at Polliwog Park in Manhattan Beach on October 19 by the northeast entrance to the park.
PALM WARBLERS were at Woodlawn Cemetery in Santa Monica on October 14 and in Signal Hill in Long Beach on October 16.
A PAINTED REDSTART continued in Brentwood by 1104 Wellsley Ave. through October 16.
A ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK continued in Glendora through October 11 and one was on San Clemente Island on October 18.
A remarkable fallout of vagrants in Avalon on Santa Catalina Island on October 16 produced the following birds: YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER, LEAST FLYCATCHER, PHILADELPHIA VIREO, RED-EYED VIREO, PACIFIC WREN, four TENNESSEE WARBLERS, LUCY’s WARBLER, AMERICAN REDSTART, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER, SUMMER TANAGER and ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK.
