This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for February 23, 2024.

A BROAD-BILLED HUMMINGBIRD was at a residence in Glendora through February 22.

A LAUGHING GULL was along the Los Angeles River in Maywood between the Atlantic and Slauson crossings on February 17.

LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS included one along the Los Angeles River between Atlantic and Slauson in Maywood and two at the Downey Road Crossing just north of there through February 22.  Another was at Malibu Lagoon on February 20.

A PACIFIC LOON continued at Quail Lake near Gorman through February 16.

Up to six YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS continued in Alamitos Bay around Maurice Mossy Kent Park through February 22.

Up to nine YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS continued at Ballona Lagoon and around the Ballona Creek mouth through February 19.

A ZONE-TAILED HAWK continued in Monrovia through February 21 in the vicinity of Grand Ave. Park.

A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER continued at Veteran’s Park in Sylmar through February 21.

A “PRAIRIE” MERLIN was at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB on February 16.

A BROWN-CRESTED FLYCATCHER continued near the South Coast Botanic Garden in Palos Verdes Estates through February 20 near the north end of Palos Verdes Drive North.

A TROPICAL KINGBIRD continued at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera through February 17.

The THICK-BILLED KINGBIRD continued in Griffith Park through February 22.  Google Earth coordinates are approximately 34.14079, -118.28856, although the bird moves around the area.

A WESTERN FLYCATCHER continued on the east side of Eaton Blanche Park in Pasadena through February 19.

An EASTERN PHOEBE continued at San Dimas Canyon Park in the open area northeast of the Nature Center through February 16.

A WHITE WAGTAIL, not seen since January 25, was observed again along the Los Angeles River in Glendale on February 21.  It was below the Riverside Drive crossing.

A LARK BUNTING was found in the Antelope Valley on February 21 along Avenue O east of 10th Street West.

A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW continued at a residence in Silver Lake through February 20 and another was a Vina Vieja Park in Pasadena through February 18 by the north end of the parking area adjacent to the dog park. 

A DARK-EYED “GRAY-HEADED” JUNCO was on the north side of Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas near Picnic Are 3 and 4 through February 22.  Another continued at Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena through February 17.

A continuing SWAMP SPARROW was at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB through February 17 northeast of Big Piute.  A RUSTY BLACKBIRD continued along Ave. C through February 22.

A GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE continued at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood through February 21 below Monte Verde Park.  Also continuing here was a BROWN THRASHER through February 18.

Another GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE continued at Wheeler Park in Claremont through February 17.  A BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER continued here through February 18.

A continuing RUSTY BLACKBIRD continued at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera through February 18. 

An AMERICAN REDSTART continued near the middle of Oakdale Memorial Park in Glendora through February 17.  Also seen here was a BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER on February 17.

The CAPE MAY WARBLER at Loyola Marymount University continued here through February 18-- 33.968, -118.4167.

Another CAPE MAY WARBLER was along the west side of Alhambra Park from February 20-22.

A BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER was at Vincent Lugo Park in San Gabriel from February 22-23 and a DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHER was there on February 23.

A PAINTED REDSTART continued at San Dimas Canyon Park through February 22 in the southwest corner.

Other PAINTED REDSTARTS continued at residences in Brentwood through February 17 and in Arcadia through February 18.
