This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for November 13.

Two TUNDRA SWANS were at Quail Lake near Gorman on November 10.

A male and female BLACK SCOTER and a female WHITE-WINGED SCOTER were off Dockweiler State Beach in El Segundo on November 9, opposite the Hyperion Bluff parking area.

Along the Los Angeles River in Long Beach between the Willow Street and Anaheim crossings, a female LONG-TAILED DUCK and a female BLACK SCOTER were present on November 13.

A SANDHILL CRANE was seen flying down the Los Angeles River in Long Beach on November 11.

A MASKED BOOBY was observed flying past Pt. Vicente on November 8.

An AMERICAN BITTERN continued at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB through November 10.  A letter of permission is required for entry.

The immature LITTLE BLUE HERON continued at Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro through November 12.  It has been around the salt marsh and in the general area.

At least one YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON continued at the Ballona Freshwater Marsh through November 8.

Single SWAINSON’S HAWKS were seen over the Los Angeles River in Long Beach on November 6 and at Hopkins Wilderness Park in Redondo Beach on November 10.

A ZONE-TAILED HAWK continued in Monrovia in the vicinity of Grand Ave. Park through November 12.

A NORTHERN “YELLOW-SHAFTED” FLICKER was in pepper trees on the north shore of the lake at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas from November 8-11.

A “PRAIRIE” MERLIN was at the Hansen Dam spreading grounds (below the dam) on November 7.

An ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER was at Madrona Marsh in Torrance through November 11.

The TROPICAL KINGBIRD continued at Entradero Park in Torrance through November 11, usually around the pond.

A late and potentially wintering HAMMOND’S FLYCATCHER was at Carr Park in Glendale on November 9.

The EASTERN PHOEBE at the Bette Davis Picnic Area in Glendale was reported through November 12.  It is in the same spot as last winter, on the north side of the Los Angeles River, usually just east of the Riverside Drive crossing.

Getting late was a CASSIN’S VIREO in Juniper Hills on November 10.

CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS were at Vina Vieja Park in Pasadena through November 12, at Domenic Massari Park in Palmdale from November 6-11 (up to three individuals), at Entradero Park in Torrance through November 6, at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood on November 8 and at Griffith Manor Park in Glendale from November 11-12 (two individuals).

DARK-EYED “GRAY-HEADED” JUNCOS continued around the lower parking lot by the athletic field at Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena through November 8, with two at the Mt. Wilson Observatory on November 6 (note there is currently no public access to this location), one on San Clemente Island on November 8, one at Madrona Marsh in Torrance on November 11 and one at Stephen Sorenson Park in Lake Los Angeles also on November 11.

The DARK-EYED “RED-BACKED” JUNCO found at Domenic Massari Park in Palmdale on November 6 continued through November 9.

A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was at Emerald Isla Park in Glendale on November 11.

A SWAMP SPARROW was at Castaic Lagoon on November11.  It is being seen on the west side of the lagoon at the north edge of the main beach close to the shoreline.

Another SWAMP SPARROW was at Descanso Gardens on November 5 by the bird observation platform at the pond.

Up to two GREEN-TAILED TOWHEES continued at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood through November 12.  Another was Jackie Robinson Park in Palmdale on November 11.

At least one BOBOLINK continued in the weedy area behind the dam by the spillway at Santa Fe Dam in Irwindale through November 11.

SCOTT’S ORIOLES were in Altadena on November 7, in Glendora on November 11 and at Little Santa Anita Canyon in Sierra Madre on November 12.

Another SCOTT’S ORIOLE and an ORCHARD ORIOLE were reported at a residence in Altadena on November 10.

BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS continued at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood through November 6, at Madrona Marsh in Torrance through November 6 and at Hopkins Wilderness Park in Redondo Beach through November 10.

A late NASHVILLE WARBLER was at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB from November 10-12 by parking 9.  A letter of permission is required to enter.

Two PALM WARBLERS were on San Clemente Island on November 10.

An immature male SUMMER TANAGER was at Veteran’s Park in Sylmar on November 11.

A female type PAINTED BUNTING was at Hopkins Wilderness Park in Redondo Beach from November 8-10.  It was initially down the hill from the middle restroom.
