This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for December 24.

 

Three TUNDRA SWANS were seen briefly at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB (letter of permission required for access) on December 21.

 

A RED-NECKED GREBE was off Escondido Beach in Malibu on December 19.

 

Up to twenty-five MOUNTAIN PLOVERS continued in the Antelope Valley through December 18 at the A&G Sod Farm. The location is at 50th Street East and Avenue N. This is private property.  Please bird from the road only.

 

A SOLITARY SANDPIPER continued on the main lake at Hansen Dam through December 18.

 

The LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL continued at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas through December 21.  It was last seen from the north shore area.

 

A NEOTROPIC CORMORANT was along the San Gabriel River at the San Jose Creek confluence from December 18-20.

 

ZONE-TAILED HAWKS were over Eaton Canyon in Pasadena, in North Glendora, At the L.A. County Arboretum in Arcadia and at Grand Ave. Park in Monrovia on December 18.

 

A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK continued at Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB (permission required for entry) through December 21.

 

A “PRAIRIE” MERLIN (subspecies richardsonii) was at Valley Plaza Park in North Hollywood on December 18.

 

TROPICAL KINGBIRDS continued at El Dorado Park in Long Beach (east of the pond) through December 19 and at Entradero Park in Torrance through December 22.

 

A HAMMOND’S FLYCATCHERS were at the L.A. County Arboretum in Arcadia on December 18 and at Los Cerritos Park in Long Beach on December 18.

 

A DUSKY FLYCATCHER continued at the north end of the west side of the channel that divides the two lakes at Peck Road Water Conservation Park in Arcadia through December 22.  A CASSIN’S VIREO was at Peck from December 21-22.

 

PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHERS were at the Huntington Gardens in San Marino, at Hansen Dam and at the Sepulveda Basin on December 18.

 

The EASTERN PHOEBE at the Bette Davis Picnic Area in Glendale continued through December 22. It stays just below the Riverside Drive bridge and ranges from the southern part of the park down into the river channel. 

 

Another EASTERN PHOEBE was at Lake Lindero in Agoura Hills on December 19.

 

Six MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS were at Bixby Village Golf Course in Long Beach on December 18.

 

A VARIED THRUSH was in the east central part of the South Coast Botanic Garden in Palos Verdes Estates on December 21.

 

A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW continued at Chavez Ravine at Elysian Park through December 17.

 

A DARK-EYED “GRAY-HEADED” JUNCO continued around the sports field by the lower parking lot at Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena through December 18.  Another continued at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas through December 24 by the north shore play area.  A DARK-EYED “PINK-SIDED” JUNCO continued at Bonelli (Sailboat Cove area) through December 24.

 

A HARRIS’S SPARROW was at a residence in Monrovia on December 24.

 

WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS continued at Willow Springs Park in Long Beach through December 18 and one was at Pomona College on December 18.  Another continued in Glendora through December 22.

 

A GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE continued at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood through December 22.  An ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER was here from December 18-22 and a CASSIN’S VIREO was present on December 18.

 

Another GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE continued in Signal Hill (south side trails southwest of Hilltop Park) through December 18.

 

A male HOODED ORIOLE was at the Huntington Gardens (northwest end of the Desert Garden) in San Marino on December 18.  Another HOODED ORIOLE was at the Sepulveda Recreation Center in Panorama City on December 18.

 

A SCOTT’S ORIOLE continued at Crystalaire near Llano through December 21.

 

BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS continued at Madrona Marsh in Torrance and at Alondra Park Reservoir through December 17.  Others were at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood through December 19, at Hansen Dam on December 18, along the Los Angeles River in Glendale (north of the Hyperion crossing) and at Polliwog Park in Manhattan Beach through December 17.

 

A CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER continued at Wardlow Park in Long Beach through December 22 north of the community building.

 

A BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER was at the Huntington Gardens in San Marino from December 18-23.  It has been hanging around the southwest corner of the main parking lot just to the north and west of the pedestrian main entrance, favoring Tipu trees.  A LUCY’S WARBLER was in the same area from December 20-22.

 

The PAINTED REDSTART at Inglewood Park Cemetery continued through December 24. It stays in the lone large oak tree in the Pinecrest section.

 

A SUMMER TANAGER was at Legg Lake in South El Monte on December 18 (between the north and middle lakes).  Other SUMMER TANAGERS continued at Wardlow Park in Long Beach through December 20 and at the Village Green Condominiums in Los Angeles through December 19.
