This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for October 19, 2024.

Several LESSER NIGHTHAWKS continued in the early evenings at Santa Fe Dam in Irwindale through October 18.

The PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER continued along lower Ballona Creek through October 19.  Check the area above the Pacific Ave. bridge.  It is usually mixed in with the flock of Black-bellied Plovers. 

Another PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER was at Malibu Lagoon on October 12.

Two SABINE’S GULLS were at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB on October 16.

Up to two LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were along the Los Angeles River between the Atlantic and Slauson crossings through October 13.

Another LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was at Peck Road Water Conservation Park in Arcadia on October 17.

The adult LITTLE BLUE HERON continued at Colorado Lagoon in Long Beach through October 18.

WESTERN CATTLE EGRETS included one along the Los Angeles River at the end of 26th Street on October 12 and one at the Piute Ponds on October 18.

A BROAD-WINGED HAWK was above UCLA in Westwood on October 18.

A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was at Veteran’s Park in Sylmar on October 16.

A TROPICAL KINGBIRD continued at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera through October 11.  Another was at Colorado Lagoon in Long Beach through October 10.

A CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPUR was at Griffith Park’s Toyon Landfill on October 19.  This area is open to the public weekends only.

A GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was at Santa Fe Dam in Irwindale in one of the picnic areas on October 14.

LARK BUNTINGS were at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB (letter of permission required) on October 12, at Santa Fe Dam in Irwindale from October 13-14 (weedy area by the spillway).

CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS were in the Rose Garden at Exposition Park in Los Angeles on October 14, in Long Beach on October 15 and at the north end of Peck Road Water Conservation Park in Arcadia on October 18.

An ORCHARD ORIOLE was at Avalon on Santa Catalina Island on October 12 as was a ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK and a PAINTED BUNTING.

BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS were at MacArthur Park on October 12, at the Silver Lake Recreation Center from October 13-18 and at Banning Park in Wilmington on October 19.

A TENNESSEE WARBLER was at Creek Park in La Mirada on October 15 and another was on San Clemente Island on October 17.

AMERICAN REDSTARTS were in Manhattan Beach on October 13 and at Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena (willow forest) on October 13.

A returning CAPE MAY WARBLER was at Loyola Marymount University on October 19.  It has favored this spot in past years 33.9685, -118.4175

A MAGNOLIA WARBLER was at the Piute Ponds on October 12.

A BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER was on San Clemente Island on October 16.

A BLACKPOLL WARBLER was at the Silver Lake Recreation Center from October 15-18

PALM WARBLERS were at Polliwog Park in Manhattan Beach on October 15, at Avalon on Catalina Island on October 15 and along the Los Angeles River below Burbank Blvd. in the Sepulveda Basin on October 18.

SUMMER TANAGERS were in Topanga Canyon on October 13, continuing at Chavez Ravine in Elysian Park through October 11 and in Griffith Park both in the Old Zoo area and by the Wilson and Harding Golf Course from October 16-17.  A LUCY’S WARBLER was at the latter location from October 15-16.  Google Maps 34.1454, -118.2838
