This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for July 28, 2023.

The TUNDRA BEAN-GOOSE continued at the Earvin Magic Johnson Recreation Area in Willowbrook through July 27.

At least two BLACK SWIFTS continued to be reported near Claremont Wilderness Park along Cobal Canyon Road (by the bench) through July 22.  Late afternoon is the best time to look for them.

Offshore in the general vicinity of Santa Catalina Island, five CRAVERI’S MURRELETS, a SABINE’S GULL, a RED-BILLED TROPICBIRD and nine Cook’s Petrels were recorded on July 23.

A MAGNIFICENT FRIGATEBIRD was at King Harbor in Redondo Beach on July 24.

YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS continued at Ballona Lagoon, with up to four birds present through July 27 and at the San Gabriel River mouth through July 22.

An early WILLOW FLYCATCHER was at Stephen Sorensen Park in Lake Los Angeles on July 24.

A PURPLE MARTIN was reported at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB (letter of permission required) on July 22.

An INDIGO BUNTING was in the Sepulveda Basin along the Los Angeles River north of Burbank Blvd. by the model airplane field on July 23.

A male and female INDIGO BUNTING were along the lower Los Angeles River in Long Beach (on the east side below the Willow Street crossing) on July 28.
