It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Eleanor Osgood, our long-time friend and volunteer extraordinaire.
Eleanor Osgood dedicated more than 30 years to volunteerism focused on birds and preserving their habitat. Los Angeles Audubon Society nominated Eleanor for the 2020 Disney Conservation Hero Award, and her award of this distinction was announced in 2021.
Eleanor first learned about birds as a member of Los Angeles Audubon Society, then volunteered with the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County as a bird collection specimen preparer. From 1995 to 2000 Eleanor assisted with the mapping of breeding areas for the LA County Breeding Bird Atlas which is used by researchers, biologists, and conservationists to further knowledge of bird biology and assist in conservation efforts. Eleanor loved introducing non-birders or beginners to the world of birds through monthly bird walks which she led at Franklin Canyon and Stoneview Nature Center, and at presentations where she had the opportunity to talk about the need to protect and preserve habitat for birds and wildlife. This led to Eleanor co-authoring the LA Audubon Society publication “Bird-Friendly Guide to Tree and Shrub Trimming and Removal,” in Spanish and English. In addition to leading birds walks,
Eleanor managed a habitat restoration project known as the “Weed Warriors” program at Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area. This restoration work will continue in her honor providing shelter and food for birds and other wildlife and improving the environmental health of the community. Eleanor's work has helped to engage people of all ages in the wonders of birdwatching and the importance of restoring and protecting nature within our urban communities.
