This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for February 17, 2023.

A SANDHILL CRANE continued in Pico Rivera at the Rio Hondo Spreading Basins through February 14. The entrance is at the intersection of Mines Ave. and Paramount.

An AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER was at Malibu Lagoon on February 15.

One to two LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS continued along the Los Angeles River in the Maywood area through February 13 between the Atlantic and Imperial crossings.

Up to nineteen YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS continued near Maurice Kent Park in Alamitos Bay through February 15.  Another was at the Ballona Creek mouth on February 12.

A NORTHERN “YELLOW-SHAFTED” FLICKER continued at Madrona Marsh in Torrance through February 15.

A “PRAIRIE” MERLIN (ssp. richardsoni) was east of the Rancho Sierra Golf Course in the east Antelope Valley on February 12.

TROPICAL KINGBIRDS continued in Area 3 of El Dorado Park in Long Beach (west of the main lake) through February 11 and along the lower Los Angeles River in Long Beach (below the Willow Street crossing) through February 12.

A THICK-BILLED KINGBIRD (apparently present in the vicinity since at least October 31) was at the Los Angeles Zoo on February 13.

A WESTERN KINGBIRD continued at Madrona Marsh in Torrance through February 15.

A LEAST FLYCATCHER was at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail between Monte Verde Park and Del Amo through February 16.

HAMMOND’S FLYCATCHERS were at the Bette Davis Picnic Area in Glendale through February 16 (near the restrooms), continuing at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas (by the small north shore pond) through February 14 and at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood (south of Del Amo) through February 15.

A PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHER was at Rancho Los Alamitos Historic Ranch on February 16.

Up to eleven CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPURS continued in the west Antelope Valley near Neenach through February 13 as did one LAPLAND LONGSPUR through February 11.

Another five LAPLAND LONGSPURS continued in the east Antelope Valley east of 70th Street East and south of Ave. F.

A DARK-EYED “PINK-SIDED” JUNCO continued at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas in the Sailboat Cove area through February 16.

A HARRIS’S SPARROW continued at a residence in Beverly Hills through February 13.

Up to four SWAMP SPARROWS continued at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas through February 16 at the north shore in the vicinity of the small pond.  A BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER also continued in this area through February 14.

A GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE continued at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood through February 14 below Monte Verde Park.  A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was reported here on February 12.

A SCOTT’S ORIOLE continued at Crystalaire in the east Antelope Valley through February 14.

BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS were at Legg Lake in South El Monte on February 11 (north of the east island on the middle lake), continuing at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood (by the south end of Monte Verde Park) through February 14 and continuing at Hopkins Wilderness Park in Redondo Beach through February 16.

A LUCY’S WARBLER was at Col. Leon H. Washington Park in Los Angeles on February 15 and a NASHVILLE WARBLER was there from February 15-16. Another NASHVILLE WARBLER was at Shadow Park in Cerritos on February 12.

The CAPE MAY WARBLER at Loyola Marymount University continued through February 16. Parking is free on weekends, park by the church. Google Earth coordinates 33.9687, -118.4167.

A PINE WARBLER was at La Mirada Community Regional Park in La Mirada from February 13-16 in the north central part of the park.

A TENNESSEE WARBLER and a PAINTED REDSTART continued south of Birdcage Park in Long Beach through February 16.

A SUMMER TANAGER was at Cheviot Hills Park on February 15.  Others continued on the north shore of Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas through February 16 and by the Whittier Narrows Nature Center in South El Monte through February 12.
