This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for 30 December 2022.

A SANDHILL CRANE was at the Rio Hondo Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera from December 29-30.  From the entrance at Mines Ave. and Paramount Blvd. the bird was in the second basin on the left as you walk in.

A TUFTED PUFFIN was found just west of the Palos Verdes Peninsula on December 26.

A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL continued at MacArthur Park in Los Angeles through December 26.

Another LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was at Silver Lake Reservoir on December 23.

This past week NEOTROPIC CORMORANTS were at Legg Lake in South El Monte, at Don Knabe Community Park in Cerritos and along the Los Angeles River above Burbank Blvd in the Sepulveda Basin.

CALIFORNIA CONDORS were south of Pyramid Lake along the I-5 and at Quail Lake near Gorman (2 birds) on December 28.

Two ZONE-TAILED HAWKS were observed near Kiwanis Park at Grand Ave. in Monrovia on December 28.

A SHORT-EARED OWL was on San Clemente Island on December 29.

A NORTHERN “YELLOW-SHAFTED” FLICKER was at Henrietta Basin in Redondo Beach on December 26.

A DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHER was at Peck Park in San Pedro from December 28-29.  It was moving around the southwestern area of the park.

A TROPICAL KINGBIRD continued below the Willow Street crossing along the Los Angeles River in Long Beach through December 26.

A HAMMOND’S FLYCATCHER was at Franklin Park in Redondo Beach on December 26.

Another HAMMOND’S FLYCATCHER continued by the small north shore pond at Bonelli Regional Park through December 29.  Also in this area are a continuing BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, several SWAMP SPARROWS, a couple of WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS and a SUMMER TANAGER.

A PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHER at Oxford Lagoon in Marina del Rey on December 22.

An EASTERN PHOEBE was at Scherer Park in Long Beach from December 24-28.  It was near the wood bridge across from the Atlantic Ave. parking lot.

A PACIFIC WREN continued at Temescal Gateway Park in Pacific Palisades through December 29 in the southwest corner by the first footbridge.

Another PACIFIC WREN was in Little Santa Anita Canyon above Sierra Madre on December 27.

A CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPUR was in the east Antelope Valley on December 23.  Up to four LAPLAND LONGSPURS were in the same area from December 26-29.  The location is the field southeast of 70th Street East and Avenue F.  Most of the land here is private property, be sure to bird from the road only.

A DARK-EYED “GRAY-HEADED” JUNCO continued at Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena through December 24 around the west side sports field.  Another was in Monrovia on December 27.

A DARK-EYED “PINK-SIDED” JUNCO continued at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas in the Sailboat Cove area through December 23.

Another DARK-EYED “PINK-SIDED” JUNCO was at Highridge Park in Rolling Hills Estates on December 28.

A GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE was at the Dominguez Gap Wetlands in Long Beach on December 25.

WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS were in Avalon on Santa Catalina (4 birds), in Rolling Hills on the Palos Verdes Peninsula (2 birds), in Monrovia and in Pasadena.

A HOODED ORIOLE continued near the Los Angeles River in Atwater Village through December 26 and a BALTIMORE ORIOLE was at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera on December 26.

A BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER continued at Madrona Marsh in Torrance through December 28.

A NASHVILLE WARBLER was at Golden Shore Marine Reserve in Long Beach on December 26.

A NORTHERN PARULA continued at Ken Malloy Harbor Regional Park through December 27 in Tipu trees near the south entrance.

A PALM WARBLER continued at Avila Park in Long Beach (along the Los Angeles River below Willow Street) through December 28.  Another was in the same area.

The PAINTED REDSTART along Hackett Ave. south of Birdcage Park in Long Beach continued through December 29.

SUMMER TANAGERS were at El Nido Park in Redondo Beach, at Elysian Park, at Johnson Lake in Pasadena, Torrance Park and at Alma Park in San Pedro.

A BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK was at the LA County Arboretum in Arcadia on December 27.
