This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for 16 December 2022.

A TUNDRA SWAN was along the San Gabriel River in Montebello between Slauson Ave. and Telegraph Road through December 9.

A WHITE-WINGED DOVE was in San Dimas on December 15.

The PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER continued along Ballona Creek upstream from the Pacific Ave. bridge through December 11.

Up to fifteen MOUNTAIN PLOVERS were at the A&G Sod Farm in the Antelope Valley through December 10.  The sod farm is at 50th Street East and Ave. N.  Be sure to bird from the road only as this is private property.

A RED KNOT was at the Ballona Salt Pan on December 11.

Up to two LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS continued at MacArthur Park in Los Angeles through December 11.

NEOTROPIC CORMORANTS were at Legg Lake in South El Monte, at Belvedere Park in East Los Angeles through December 16 and at La Mirada Community Regional Park on December 15.

Up to four YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS continued at Ballona Lagoon in Marina del Rey through December 13. 

A ZONE-TAILED HAWK continued in Monrovia in the vicinity of Grand Ave. Park through December 16 and another was over north Altadena on December 13.

A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was at Veteran’s Park in Sylmar on December 14.

NORTHERN “YELLOW-SHAFTED” FLICKERS were at Lancaster City Park on December 13 and in Pasadena on December15.

A “BLACK” MERLIN was reported at Birdcage Park in Long Beach from December 10-11.

TROPICAL KINGBIRDS continued along the lower Los Angeles River in Long Beach (below the Willow St. crossing) through December 13 and one was reported at Ken Malloy Harbor Regional Park in Harbor City on December 12.

A WESTERN KINGBIRD was at Madrona Marsh in Torrance from December 9-13

PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHERS were by Berkshire Creek at Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena through December 10 and by the small north shore pond at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas through December 14.  A HAMMOND’S FLYCATCHER was at the latter location through December 16.

An EASTERN PHOEBE continued at Lake Lindero in Agoura Hills through December 12.

A WARBLING VIREO was reported at La Mirada Creek Park on December 13.

A PACIFIC WREN was at Charlton Flat in the San Gabriel Mountains on December 10.

Another PACIFIC WREN was at Temescal Gateway Park in Pacific Palisades from December 15-16 in the southwest corner by the first footbridge.

The SEDGE WREN at the Piute Ponds (east of Duckbill Lake) was reported there through December 16.  A letter of permission is required for entry.

The japonicus AMERICAN PIPIT continued at the Ferraro soccer fields in Glendale through December 13.

A DARK-EYED “GRAY-HEADED” JUNCO was at the Hollywood Reservoir (aka Lake Hollywood) on December 9 west of the main dam.

A DARK-EYED “PINK-SIDED” JUNCO continued at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas in the Sailboat Cove area.

WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS included one at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas through December 16, one at St. Andrew’s Abbey in Valyermo through December 10, one at Sycamore Canyon in Whittier on December 10, two on the Palos Verdes Peninsula from December 9-11, one at Topanga State Park, one at Lake Hollywood on December 12, one at Willow Springs Park in Long Beach on December 13 and one at Temescal Gateway Park in Pacific Palisades on December 16.

Up to three SWAMP SPARROWS were at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas through December 16, with two of these by the small north shore pond.

Another SWAMP SPARROW continued along the Los Angeles River in Glendale below the 5 Freeway through December 14.

The GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE continued along the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood through December 11.

A SCOTT’S ORIOLE continued at Crystalaire in Llano through December 13.

A BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER continued at Bonelli Regional Park along the north shore through December 16.

A TENNESSEE WARBLER was at Biola University in La Mirada on December 12.

An AMERICAN REDSTART continued along the north side of Pearblossom Park in the Antelope Valley through December 10.

A CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER was along the west side of the San Gabriel River below Slauson Ave. on December 10.

A PALM WARBLER continued at Avila Park in Long Beach (along the Los Angeles River below Willow Street) through December 13.

PAINTED REDSTARTS were near Birdcage Park / Clipperton Lane in Long Beach through December 14 and along Afton Street in Pasadena through December 10.

SUMMER TANAGERS were at Brookside Park in Pasadena on December 9, at Bonelli Regional Park in Pasadena through December 14, in southwest Pasadena on December 12, at Stearn’s Champions Park in Long Beach through December 14, by Johnston Lake in Pasadena on December 16 and continuing at Polliwog Park in Manhattan Beach through December 16.
