This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for September 9.
WHITE-WINGED DOVES were at two locations in the east Antelope Valley from September 4-8.
A RED KNOT was at Malibu Lagoon through September 8.
A SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER was along the Los Angeles River in Glendale from September 5-9 mostly near the Bette Davis Picnic Area but ranging south to the 134 Freeway crossing.
Another SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER continued at Malibu Lagoon through September 4.
A SABINE’S GULL was at the Piute Ponds from September 5-7.
Two MAGNIFICENT FRIGATEBIRDS were off Torrance Beach on September 4.
This past week NEOTROPIC CORMORANTS were at the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve in Van Nuys, along the Los Angeles River in Glendale, at Almansor Park in Alhambra on September 1 and at the San Gabriel River and San Jose Creek confluence.
Up to seven YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were at Ballona Lagoon in Marina del Rey through September 9. Another was at Cabrillo Beach Park in San Pedro on September 1.
A ZONE-TAILED HAWK was seen at Eaton Canyon in Pasadena on September 9.
An EASTERN KINGBIRD was along the east side of the lower Los Angeles River in Long Beach below the Pacific Coast Highway bridge on September 9.
A YELLOW-GREEN VIREO was at Eaton Canyon in Pasadena from September 6-9. It has been rather secretive but is being seen most often in a sycamore tree where the main trail first crosses the wash (north of the Nature Center). It has been seen also in this general area on both sides of the wash.
A PURPLE MARTIN was at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas on September 5.
A “LARGE-BILLED” SAVANNAH SPARROW was on the beach immediately south of the Ballona Creek mouth on September 1.
The NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH at Peck Road Water Conservation Park in Arcadia continued through September 6. It has been near the northeast corner of the north lake.
Another NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH was reported at the Sepulveda Basin on September 3.
A BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER was at Charmlee Park in the Santa Monica Mountains on September 3.
A LUCY’S WARBLER was in Agua Amarga Canyon north of Lunada Bay Elementary School from September 5-6.
An AMERICAN REDSTART was at Madrona Marsh in Torrance on September 6 in the willow stand and another was at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB (letter of permission required) on September 7.
A male SUMMER TANAGER was in San Dimas Canyon below the lower dam on September 3.
