This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for January 26, 2023.
A WHITE-WINGED DOVE was at Mountain View Cemetery in Altadena on January 20.
Up to ten LESSER NIGHTHAWKS were at Santa Fe Dam in Irwindale through January 23.
A MOUNTAIN PLOVER continued on San Clemente Island through January 21.
A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL continued along the Los Angeles River by Downey Road in Vernon through January 24.
A PACIFIC LOON continued at Quail Lake near Gorman through January 20.
At least nine YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS continued at Ballona Lagoon in Marina Del Rey through January 25. Another was at Sims Bio Pond in Long Beach also on January 25.
A ZONE-TAILED HAWK continued in Monrovia through January 25. One or more birds have been seen at Grand Ave. Park, Sawpit Wash and at Monrovia Recreation Park.
The YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER at Descanso Gardens in La Canada was reported through January 22 in the courtyard area past the visitor’s center.
Two TROPICAL KINGBIRDS continued at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera through January 24. Two PALM WARBLERS also continued here on the west side of the north basin.
A THICK-BILLED KINGBIRD continued in Griffith Park through January 21. Google Earth coordinates are approximately 34.1409, -118.2880, but the bird moves around the area. A HEPATIC TANAGER also continued in this area, also through January 23.
A BELL’S VIREO continued at the Huntington Gardens in San Marino (south end of the desert garden) through January 21 and another near the northwest corner of Rio de Los Angeles Park on January 26.
The WINTER WREN continued at Castaic Lagoon through January 24. Google Earth coordinates 34.5091, -118.6135.
The BROWN THRASHER continued at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood through January 25 below Monte Verde Park. A GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE was in this area also through January 25.
A WHITE WAGTAIL was along the Los Angeles River in Glendale on January 25. It was between the Bette Davis Picnic Area and up to a half mile downstream from there. Extensive searching the following day failed to locate the bird.
A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW continued in Silver Lake through January 23 and one was in the southeast part of Area 3 of El Dorado Park in Long Beach through January 21.
A DARK-EYED “GRAY-HEADED” JUNCO continued north of the lower parking area on the west side of Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena through January 23.
A SWAMP SPARROW continued at Loyola Marymount University and seen from the north end of parking lot W through January 21.
A HOODED ORIOLE continued in the Desert Garden at the Huntington Gardens in San Marino through January 24.
A BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER continued at Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena (in the southwest area) through January 24. Also present in this area was a CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER continuing through January 24. A PACIFIC WREN continued in the same area through January 24. Google Earth coordinates 34.1890, -118.1775
An AMERICAN REDSTART continued near the middle of Oakdale Memorial Park in Glendora through January 20.
A CAPE MAY WARBLER continued at Loyola Marymount University through January 21. Google Earth coordinates 33.9688, -118.4170
A PAINTED REDSTART continued at a residence in Arcadia through January 25.
