This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for January 5, 2023.

A WHITE-WINGED DOVE was at Woodlawn Cemetery in Santa Monica on January 3.

A RED-NECKED GREBE continued at Castaic Lagoon through January 3. 

The PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER along lower Ballona Creek continued on the salt pan through January 3.

LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were along the Los Angeles River between the Atlantic and Slauson crossings through December 29, at Malibu Lagoon through January 1, and along the Los Angeles River (up to two at Downey Road) through January 4.

A ZONE-TAILED HAWK continued in Monrovia through January 4.

Twelve YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS continued at Ballona Lagoon in Playa Del Rey through December 31.

A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was at Castaic Lagoon (near the restroom by parking lot 9) from December 29-31.

Another YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was at Descanso Gardens in La Canada on January 2.

A BROWN-CRESTED FLYCATCHER continued at the South Coast Botanic Garden in Palos Verdes Estates through January 4.  Also present was a WESTERN FLYCATCHER.  Both were near the Arizona Crossing.

A THICK-BILLED KINGBIRD continued in Griffith Park through January 4.  Google Earth coordinates are approximately 34.1409, -118.2880, but the bird moves around the area.  A HEPATIC TANAGER also continued in this area, also through January 4.

A HAMMOND’S FLYCATCHER continued at Ernest E. Debs Park through January 1.

A DUSKY FLYCATCHER continued at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB (letter of permission required) through January 2 along Ave. C.

Another DUSKY FLYCATCHER continued at Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena (by Berkshire Creek and along the southwest side) through January 1.

An EASTERN PHOEBE continued at Lake Lindero in Agoura Hills through January 2.

At Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena, a PACIFIC WREN continued through January 2, a CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER in the southwest portion through January 4 and a TENNESSEE WARBLER along the east side path north of the dam through January 1.

A WINTER WREN was at Castaic Lagoon from December 31-January 3.  Google Earth coordinates 34.5096, -118.6129

A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was in Area 3 of El Dorado Park in Long Beach through January 2 along the west fence line north of restroom 41.

Another CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was near Little Harbor on Santa Catalina Island on December 29.

A SWAMP SPARROW was at Loyola Marymount University and viewed from the north end of parking lot W from December 31-January 4.

A GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE was at Wheeler Park in Claremont from December 30-January 4 and another continued at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood (south of Monte Verde Park) through December 31.  One was also in Juniper Hills on January 1.

A HOODED ORIOLE continued in Rolling Hills through January 1.

BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS were in the southwest part of Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena through January 4, at Wheeler Park in Claremont and near the southeast corner of the Bette Davis Picnic area in Glendale through January 2.

An AMERICAN REDSTART continued at Oakdale Memorial Park in Glendora through January 4.

A CAPE MAY WARBLER continued at Loyola Marymount University through January 4.  Google Earth coordinates 33.9688, -118.4170

A NORTHERN PARULA was by the pond at King Gillette Ranch near Calabasas on January 1.

PALM WARBLERS were along the Los Angeles River in “Frogtown” roughly adjacent the end of Altman Street on January 3, at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds through January 3 and continuing along the Los Angeles River in Long Beach (below Willow Street at Avila Park) through January 4.

A PAINTED REDSTART continued in the southwest part of San Dimas Canyon Park between the restrooms and parking lot through January 4.  Another was in Brentwood through January 4.
