Rare Bird Alert - February 26, 2021


This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for February 26.

Between 7th Street and Ocean Blvd. in Long Beach, four BLACK SCOTERS, two WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS and three LONG-TAILED DUCKS were seen on February 23.  To get to this area, you can park under the Anaheim St. bridge and walk south or in the Golden Shore Marine Reserve parking lot (metered parking) and walk north.

At least two INCA DOVES continued in Lake Los Angeles through February 21. Check 169th Street East around East Ave. N4.

A single VAUX'S SWIFT was along the Los Angeles River in Glendale by North Atwater Park through February 19 and another was over Glendora on February 20.

AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS were along the lower Los Angeles River in Long Beach through February 20 (between Willow Street and 7th Street), at Golden Shore Marine Reserve in Long Beach on February 19, at Royal Palms Beach in San Pedro through February 21 and at Malibu Lagoon on February 22.

The PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER along lower Ballona Creek continued through February 22, at which time it was north of the Lincoln Blvd / Highway 1 crossing.

Ten MOUNTAIN PLOVERS were at the A&G Sod Farm at 50th Street East and Avenue N in the Antelope Valley through February 20. At least six more continued in the fields along Avenue I just east of 110th Street East through February 21.

Up to two first cycle LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera through February 24.

Another LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was at Peck Road Water Conservation Park in Arcadia on February 20.

NEOTROPIC CORMORANTS included up to five at Frank G. Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas through February 25, one at Peck Road Water Conservation Park in Arcadia through February 19, one at Santa Fe Dam through February 20, one at Ken Malloy Harbor Regional Park in Harbor City on February 23, two on private property in Culver City from February 22-25 and one at the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve through February 25.

An AMERICAN BITTERN continued at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB through February 20 at the Ducks Unlimited Pond. A letter of permission is required for entry.

The immature LITTLE BLUE HERON at the Cabrillo / Salinas de San Pedro Salt Marsh in San Pedro was present through February 20.

Two YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were at Alamitos Bay through February 25. Check 255 N. Marina Drive as they are often roosting in the trees here.

Two CALIFORNIA CONDORS were at Quail Lake near Gorman on February 23.

The ZONE-TAILED HAWK in Monrovia continued through February 25 at Grand Avenue Park. What was probably the same bird was near Eaton Canyon in Pasadena on February 24.

The ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK near Gorman continued through February 23. It is being seen from Ralph's Ranch Road where it parallels the 5 Freeway south of Gorman.

A SHORT-EARED OWL was at Wheeler Park in Claremont on February 19.

A NORTHERN "YELLOW-SHAFTED" FLICKER was at Angelus Rosedale Cemetery in Los Angeles on February 21. Another continued at the Village Green Condominiums through February 21.

The DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHER at Heartwell Park in Long Beach continued through February 25. It has been in the area northwest of the corner of Parkcrest St. and Woodruff Ave.

The BROWN-CRESTED FLYCATCHER at Michigan Park in Whittier continued through February 23 in the southwest corner of the park.

Another BROWN-CRESTED FLYCATCHER continued at the South Coast Botanic Garden by the Arizona Crossing (and in adjacent residential areas) through February 21.

The GREATER PEWEE at Lacy Park in San Marino was seen through February 23. It has been seen at various places around the sports field. A PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHER continued at the park through February 19.

TROPICAL KINGBIRDS continued in Area 3 of El Dorado Park in Long Beach through February 17 and around the pond at Entradero Park in Torrance through February 25.

A DUSKY FLYCATCHER continued at Willow Springs Park in Long Beach through February 20.

A PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHER continued at the South Coast Botanic Garden in Rolling Hills Estates through February 19 around the pond.

The EASTERN PHOEBE at the Bette Davis Picnic Area in Glendale was reported through February 25. It is being seen on the north side of the Los Angeles River, usually just east of the Riverside Drive crossing. It may be seen in the park area proper or between there and the river channel.

The GRASSHOPPER SPARROW at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera continued through February 22. It has been at the large north basin along the east side berm (north of and across from the Mines Ave. entrance). The continuing PALM WARBLER was by the Mines Ave. entrance also through February 22.

Up to two CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS continued at Vina Vieja Park in Pasadena through February 25. Another continued at Cheviot Hills Park through February 25.

A "RED" FOX SPARROW and a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW continued at a residence in Rolling Hills through February 23.

A DARK-EYED "GRAY-HEADED" JUNCO continued at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas by the north shore play structure and a DARK-EYED "PINK-SIDED" JUNCO continued at Sailboat Cove on the west side of the lake there through February 24.

Another DARK-EYED "GRAY-HEADED" JUNCO and a DARK-EYED "PINK-SIDED" JUNCO continued in Juniper Hills through February 23.

A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW continued along the Moccasin Trail at the Rolling Hills landfill loop on the Palos Verdes Peninsula through February 21. Another was in Valley Village also through February 24.

The SWAMP SPARROW along the Los Angeles River in Glendale continued through February 21. It is at the Glendale Narrows Riverwalk, in the riverbed just above the 134 Freeway crossing.

The West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood continued to host a GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE through February 24.

The BALTIMORE ORIOLE continued through February 21 at the South Coast Botanic Garden in Rolling Hills Estates in coral trees near the entrance. A NASHVILLE WARBLER was at the same location from February 19-20.

The SCOTT'S ORIOLE near the Crystalaire Country Club in in the south Antelope Valley continued through February 23.

A LUCY'S WARBLER was at Rotary Centennial Park in Long Beach from February 22-25 and a TENNESSE WARBLER was there from February 24-25. Both were in the southeast section of the park.

A NASHVILLE WARBLER was in Area 3 at El Dorado Park in Long Beach on February 20.

The AMERICAN REDSTART at Polliwog Park in Manhattan Beach continued through February 25 by the entrance to the botanic garden.

A SUMMER TANGER continued at Wardlow Park in Long Beach through February 23.

A BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK continued near Johnson Lake in Pasadena through February 21. Another was in Glendora on February 18.
