Rare Bird Alert - March 19, 2021


This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for March 19.

A "EURASIAN" GREEN-WINGED TEAL continued at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera through March 16.

At least one SPOTTED DOVE continued south of downtown Los Angeles through March 13. Check near East 90th Street and Compton Ave. and around the Baca Arts Academy and Mt. Rose Baptist Church.

Up to four COMMON GROUND DOVES were in Cerritos just south of the Volutone parking lot (west of the 605 Freeway and south of Alondra Blvd.) through March 18.

A WHITE-WINGED DOVE was in Duarte from March 16-18 along the Duarte Bike Trail, north of Royal Oaks Drive and near Chimes Ave. Also observed here from March 16-18 was a ZONE-TAILED HAWK.

The PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER along Ballona Creek was seen through March 17 between the Lincoln Blvd. crossing and the 90 Freeway.

In the same area along Ballona Creek, a FRANKLIN'S GULL was seen below the 90 Freeway on March 15.

NEOTROPIC CORMORANTS included up to 15 birds continuing at Frank G. Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas through March 16, with another continuing at Santa Fe Dam in Irwindale through March 13 and one at the Earvin Magic Johnson Recreation Area in Willowbrook on March 18.

A YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON continued to be reported at Sims Bio Pond in Long Beach through March 14.

A significant push of SWAINSON'S HAWKS occurred this past week, with hundreds observed moving along the south-facing foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains.

The ZONE-TAILED HAWK in Monrovia continued through March 17 in and around Grand Avenue Park.

The DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHER at Heartwell Park in Long Beach continued through March 12. It has been in the area northwest of the corner of Parkcrest St. and Woodruff Ave.

The GREATER PEWEE at Lacy Park in San Marino was seen through March 16. It has most often been seen on the north side of the park.

A TROPICAL KINGBIRD was at the DeForest Wetlands in Long Beach (between Long Beach Blvd. and Del Amo) through March 12.

Another TROPICAL KINGBIRD continued at Entradero Park in Torrance through March 17 near the pond.

A HAMMOND'S FLYCATCHER continued at Whaley Park in Long Beach through March 12.

A DUSKY FLYCATCHER (through March 14) and an ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER (through March 18) both continued at Willow Springs Park in Long Beach.  They have been in the central part of the park near the western perimeter.

The EASTERN PHOEBE at the Bette Davis Picnic Area in Glendale was reported through March 18. It is most often seen in the Los Angeles River channel at the Riverside Drive crossing, but sometimes wanders into the park proper.

A CASSIN'S VIREO was in the northwest part of the Village Green Condominiums in Los Angeles on March 14.

A BANK SWALLOW was at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas on March 12.

A WHITE WAGTAIL in Vernon continued through March 14. It has been both upstream and downstream from the Downey Road crossing. Park on Charter Street just south of the river and walk north along Downey Road to get to the river.

Two CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS continued at Vina Vieja Park in Pasadena (at the south end of the dog park) through March 17.  Others continued at Griffith Manor Park in Glendale through March 16 and at Orcutt Ranch Horticultural Park in West Hills through March 18.

A DARK-EYED "GRAY-HEADED" JUNCO continued at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas by the north shore play structure through March 16 and a DARK-EYED "PINK-SIDED" JUNCO continued at Sailboat Cove on the west side of the lake through March 18.


Other DARK-EYED "PINK-SIDED" JUNCOS were at Lower Scholl Canyon Park in Glendale on March 12, at College Park in Claremont through March 10, in Altadena from March 14-17 and at Whaley Park in Long Beach on March 13.

WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS continued at a residence in Valley Village through March 18, at Horsethief Canyon Park in San Dimas through March 14 (by the dog park) and at a residence in Rolling Hills through March 15.

A SWAMP SPARROW was on the west side of Del Rey Lagoon in Playa del Rey on March 12.

A GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE was at the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook on March 12. Another was at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas on March 12 south of the equestrian center.

The West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood continued to host a GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE through March 17. The bird has been between Seaborn Street and Fairman Street.

The SCOTT'S ORIOLE near the Crystalaire Country Club in in the south Antelope Valley continued through March 13.

A RUSTY BLACKBIRD continued on San Clemente Island (no public access) through March 18.

A BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER continued at the north end willows at Harbor Regional Park in Harbor City through March 12.

Other BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS continued at Madrona Marsh in Torrance, at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood through March 17 and at DeForest Park in Long Beach (west of the playground) through March 18.

A PALM WARBLER continued in Area 2 of El Dorado Park in Long Beach through March 14. The bird was by the fencing around the middle utility tower between Snake Road and the Archery Range.

Another PALM WARBLER continued at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera through March 16. It is usually on the west side by the Mines Ave. entrance.

The PAINTED REDSTART at Inglewood Park Cemetery continued through March 14 in a large oak in the Pinecrest section.

The male SUMMER TANAGER at Wardlow Park in Long Beach continued through March 18 on the south side of the park.

Another SUMMER TANAGER continued at the Village Green Condominiums in Los Angeles through March 14 in the southwest part of the property. It was last seen near unit 5370.
