This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for October 9.

The PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER along lower Ballona Creek continued through October 8, generally near the UCLA boat ramp.

An AMERICAN BITTERN was at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB on October 3.  As always, a letter of permission is required to enter.

A YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON continued at the Ballona Freshwater Marsh though October 4.

BROAD-WINGED HAWKS were at Topanga Ranch on October 3 and on the Palos Verdes Peninsula on October 7.

A SHORT-EARED OWL continued at the Ballona Wetlands through October 1.

A TROPICAL KINGBIRD continued by the drying pond at Entradero Park in Torrance through October 9.

Another TROPICAL KINGBIRD was by the pond at Malibu Legacy Park on October 2.

A returning GREATER PEWEE that spent the last two winters was back in Rustic Canyon in Pacific Palisades from October 6-9.  It was first observed at 780 Latimer Road but moves around the general area frequently.

A LEAST FLYCATCHER was at Del Rey Lagoon in Palay del Rey on October 2.

A WHITE WAGTAIL was at Malibu Lagoon from October 5-7.  It has not been reported since.

A RED-THROATED PIPIT was on San Clemente Island on October 1.

A GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was in the Toyon Trail area of Griffith Park on October 7.

Two CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS were at the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve on October 2.

Two more CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS were at North Hollywood Park on October 6.  They were in the central area of the portion of the park south of Magnolia.

Another CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was at Sunnyslope Park in Pasadena on October 3.

GREEN-TAILED TOWHEES were at El Dorado Park in Long Beach on October 3 by the golf course by the end of the road near Willow Street, along the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood from October 2-3 near the Los Coyotes entrance, at O'Melveny Park in Granada Hills from October 4-7, in Altadena through October 8 and in Long Beach on October 3.

DARK-EYED "GRAY-HEADED" JUNCOS were at Piute Ponds (by parking lot 1 and the gazebo) and at Rancho Sierra Gold Course in the Antelope Valley on October 3.  A GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE was at the latter location from October 3-4.

A BOBOLINK was at Santa Fe Dam in Irwindale on October 9.  It was in the grassy area near the dam.

An OVENBIRD was at a residence in Gardena on October 4.

NORTHERN WATERTHRUSHES were on San Clemente Island on October 3, in Rustic Canyon in Pacific Palisades on October 5 (in the channel upstream from Brooktree Road) on October 5, at the Zuma Creek mouth on October 5 and at Malibu Lagoon on October 9.

A BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER continued along the Los Angeles River in Glendale through October 1.  It has been at the small park on the east side of the river just below Los Feliz.

The BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER at Banning Park in Wilmington continued through October 6 (along the fence line north of the Banning House) as did one near the southwest corner of Gwinn Park in Pasadena through October 3.

Another BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER was in the meadow area at Madrona Marsh in Torrance from October 8-9.

A TENNESSEE WARBLER was at Rancho Sierra Golf Course in the east Antelope Valley on October 4.

Another TENNESSEE WARBLER was at the Colorado Lagoon in Long Beach on October 6 in eucalyptus trees along the golf course fence.

An AMERICAN REDSTART was on San Clemente Island on October 5.

A PALM WARBLER was at Colorado Lagoon in Long Beach on October 2 along the golf course fence line.

Another PALM WARBLER was at Malibu Lagoon near where the pathway ends at the beach on October 7.

A PAINTED REDSTART was near Crescenta Valley Park in Glendale on October 2.  It was at 3810 New York Ave. and last seen flying north.

A female SUMMER TANAGER was at Ed Vincent Jr. Park in Inglewood on October 6.
