This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for January 21.

 

A continuing RED-NECKED GREBE was reported at Malibu Lagoon through January 15.

 

The PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER continued along Ballona Creek (usually between Lincoln and the 90 Freeway, but it does move along the channel) through January 17.

 

A handful of MOUNTAIN PLOVER continued at the A&G Sod Farm in the south Antelope Valley through January 16. The location is at 50th Street East and Avenue N. This is private property. Please bird from the road only. 

 

A SOLITARY SANDPIPER continued along the Los Angeles River in the Sepulveda Basin (below Burbank Blvd.) through January 17.

 

A RED KNOT was at Dockweiler State Beach in El Segundo on January 18.

 

A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL continued at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas through January 15.  It is usually seen from Sailboat Cove or from the north shore.  Also at Bonelli was an AMERICAN BITTERN at the pond near the northeast corner of the lake on January 17.

 

Another LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was at MacArthur Park from January 15-16 and two were along the Los Angeles River between the Atlantic and Slauson crossings on January 16.

 

A NEOTROPIC CORMORANT was on the south lake at Legg Lake in South El Monte from January 14-16.

 

A ZONE-TAILED HAWK continued in Monrovia through January 19, often seen flying over the intersection of Myrtle and Greystone and near Grand Ave. Park.

 

A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK continued at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB (permission required for entry) through January 15.

 

An ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER continued near the north entrance to the wildlife area in the Sepulveda Basin through January 19.

 

A TROPICAL KINGBIRD continued near the north side of Entradero Park in Torrance through January 19.

 

A HAMMOND’S FLYCATCHER continued at Los Cerritos Park through January 15.

 

A DUSKY FLYCATCHER continued in Zuma Canyon near Bonsall Drive through January 15

 

A PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHER was at the South Coast Botanic Garden in Palos Verdes Estates on January 20.

 

The EASTERN PHOEBE at the Bette Davis Picnic Area in Glendale continued through January 20. It stays just below the Riverside Drive bridge and ranges from the southern part of the park down into the river channel.

 

A DARK-EYED “GRAY-HEADED” JUNCO was at a residence in Monrovia on January 17.

 

A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW continued in the upper part of Willow Springs Park in Long Beach through January 15.

 

A GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE continued in Signal Hill through January 17.

 

A SCOTT’S ORIOLE was along Stone Canyon Road in Bel Air (near number 1663 from January 15-18.

 

Another SCOTT’S ORIOLE continued at Crystalaire in Llano through January 20.

 

A BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER continued just north of Carson Street at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood through January 19. A CASSIN’S VIREO was seen through January 14, a GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE was present here through January 14 at the north end by Monte Verde Park through January 14 and a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was seen through January 16.

 

Another BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER continued at bond Park on the south side of Los Feliz Blvd. on the east side of the LA River through January 20 and still another continued in the willows  at Madrona Marsh in Torrance through January 20.

 

A LUCY’S WARBLER continued at the Huntington Gardens in San Marino through January 16. It has been hanging around the southwest corner of the main parking lot just to the north and west of the pedestrian main entrance (and elsewhere in the vicinity), favoring the Tipu trees.

 

An immature male AMERICAN RESTART continued between Burbank Blvd. and the Los Angeles River along Haskell Creek in the Sepulveda Basin through January 19.

 

The PAINTED REDSTART at Inglewood Park Cemetery continued through January 20. It is most often seen in the lone large oak tree in the Pinecrest section.

 

SUMMER TANAGERS continued in the southwest part of Wardlow Park in Long Beach through January 14 and at Legg Lake in South El Monte (south of restroom 4) through January 15.

 

A newly discovered SUMMER TANAGER was at Finkbiner Park on January 18.
