This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for November 8, 2024.

Two TUNDRA SWANS were at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB on November 4.  A MOUNTAIN PLOVER was here on November 4 and a SANDHILL CRANE was present on November 4 and 8.  A letter of permission is required for entry.

An AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER was at Malibu Lagoon from November 2-5.  This bird was initially identified as a Pacific Golden-Plover; that report on the previous RBA is incorrect.

The PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER continued in the Ballona area in Playa del Rey through November 4.  It associates with Black-bellied Plovers either along the creek above Pacific Ave. or on the adjacent salt pan.

LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were along the Los Angeles River at Downey Road through November 7, at Zuma Creek mouth on November 2, at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds on November 3 and along the Los Angeles River between the Atlantic and Slauson crossings in Maywood (up to three individuals) through November 7.

Two YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS have been at Veteran’s Park in Sylmar, with the last report on November 6.

A “PRAIRIE” MERLIN was at Santa Fe Dam in Irwindale on November 7.

As of November 6, a DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHER returned to Vincent Lugo Park in San Gabriel, presumably to spend another winter.  Last winter it frequented the southeast corner of the park. 

TROPICAL KINGBIRDS continued at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera through November 4 (east of the end of Mines Ave.) and along the lower Los Angeles River through November 7 (south of the Willow Street crossing).

A returning THICK-BILLED KINGBIRD was back in Griffith Park as of November 7.  Google Maps coordinates 34.1407, -118.2885.  It was also seen in the nearby golf course parking lot.

The EASTERN PHOEBE at Lake Lindero in Agoura Hills was seen through November 7 near the spillway.

A GRAY CATBIRD was on San Clemente Island on November 5.

The DARK-EYED “PINK-SIDED” JUNCO continued in Sailboat Cove at Bonelli Regional Park through November 4.

A GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE was in Zuma Canyon on November 2.

A BOBOLINK was at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera through November 3.

BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS were Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas (by the old closed north shore pier) through November 5, at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood through November 3 and at Colorado Lagoon in Long Beach through November 4.

A TENNEESSEE WARBLER was at Ken Malloy Harbor Regional Park in Harbor City on November 3.

A LUCY’S WARBLER was at Ameila Mayberry Park in Whittier on November 5.

A PALM WARBLER was at Malibu Lagoon on November 3.

The PAINTED REDSTART at San Dimas Canyon Park was seen by the restrooms near the entrance through November 6.

SUMMER TANAGERS were in Palos Verdes Estates on November 2 and continuing in the Old Zoo area in Griffith Park through November 5.

A BLUE GROSBEAK was at the north end of the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera on November 5.

A late LAZULI BUNTING was by the Los Angeles River dam in the Sepulveda Basin on November 2.
