This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for August 9, 2024.

Two BLACK SWIFTS were seen along the South Hills Trail in Glendora on August 4.

Up to two PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVERS were in the Ballona area through August 8.  They have been seen on the salt pan and also along lower Ballona Creek above the Pacific Ave. bridge.

A RED KNOT was along the lower Los Angeles River (above Willow Street) in Long Beach on August 7.

A WESTERN CATTLE EGRET continued at the Ballona Salt Pan in Playa del Rey through August 8.

The continuing YELLOW-HEADED CARACARA was reported in Lomita around the Target parking lot at Narbonne Ave. and PCH and also at Cabrillo Beach through August 8.

A “Black-backed” WHITE WAGTAIL continued along the Los Angeles River just above the Rosecrans Ave. in Paramount through August 8.  This bird spends much of its time in the structure of the pipe bridge just upstream from Rosecrans, returning to the riverbed to forage periodically.  Access is from Ralph Dills Park (if access gates are open) or from Rosecrans via Orange Ave.

The TROPICAL PARULA continued near the Switzer Picnic Area in the San Gabriel Mountains through August 7.  It has been by the first stream crossing about one quarter mile downstream from the parking area.  It sings occasionally but can be difficult to locate.

A SUMMER TANAGER was in the Lower Arroyo Seco just above the 134 Freeway in Pasadena from August 3-5.
