This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for May 24, 2024.

At least three INCA DOVES were in Lake Los Angeles in the east Antelope Valley on May 23.

A WHITE-WINGED DOVE was at Alta Vicente Reserve in Rancho Palos Verdes on May 20.

An AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER was on the middle breakwater at the Los Angeles Harbor on May 19.

LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were along the Los Angeles River in Vernon at 26th Street on May 17 and at MacArthur Park on May 24.

Two BLACK SKIMMERS were in the Sepulveda Basin (wildlife area lake) on May 20.

Two COMMON LOONS were at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas on May 23.

A BROWN BOOBY was in the San Pedro Channel west of the Palos Verdes Peninsula on May 23.

WESTERN CATTLE EGRETS were at Legg Lake in South El Monte on May 14, at Whittier Narrows in South El Monte on May 18 and at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera (2 birds) on May 19.

The continuing YELLOW-HEADED CARACARA in Lomita (provenance unknown) was reported through May 23.  It has been seen near the Halal Market, Popeyes Chicken and Target parking lot at Narbonne Ave. and PCH.

A BROAD-WINGED HAWK was on San Clemente Island (no public access) from May 20-21.

A RED-EYED VIREO was on Santa Cataline Island (Avalon area) on May 23.

A PURPLE MARTIN was at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB (letter of permission required for entry) on May 22.

BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS were at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB on May 17 and at Ken Malloy Harbor Regional Park in Harbor City on May 19.

A TENNESSEE WARBLER was on San Clemente Island on May 17.

SUMMER TANAGERS were in the riparian at Soledad Canyon on May 18, at Saint Andrew’s Abbey near Valyermo on May19, in Claremont Village on May 20 and on San Clemente Island on May 20.

ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS were at Saint Andrew’s Abbey near Valyermo on May 18, at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB on May 18 and at Filiorum Preserve in Rancho Palos Verdes on May 23.
