This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for August 20.

Another WHITE-WINGED DOVE was along the lower Los Angeles River at Willow Street on August 18.

A SABINE'S GULL was at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB from August 17-19 at Thoreau Pond.  A letter of permission is required to access this location.

At least one NEOTROPIC CORMORANT continued along the lower Los Angeles River around the island just below Willow Street through August 18.

Another NEOTROPIC CORMORANT was at Westlake Lake on August 17 and one continued along the Los Angeles River in Atwater Village (just below Fletcher Drive) through August 18.

A REDDISH EGRET was at Malibu Lagoon on August 15.

Up to three YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were at the Cabrillo Salt Marsh (Salinas de San Pedro) through August 19.

Other YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS continued at Sims Bio Pond in Long Beach (up to two birds) through August 17 and along the Terranea Trail on the Palos Verdes Peninsula from August 15-16.

A NORTHERN HARRIER was at Founders Park on the Palos Verdes Peninsula on August 15.

Three PURPLE MARTINS were near Guffie Campground in the east San Gabriel Mountains on August 13.

A continuing SUMMER TANAGER was at Pearblossom Park in the south Antelope Valley through August 19.  It was heard north of the fence along the west tamarisk row.

An INDIGO BUNTING was along the San Gabirel River in South El Monte on August 18.  It has been in the riverbed just above the Whittier Narrows Dam.  This was apparently a different individual than the one previously reported at this location.  Access to this area can be made from the south Legg Lake parking area (along Durfee Ave., no fee weekdays).  From here walk south to the river and dam area, about a half mile.
