Rare Bird Alert - July 14, 2023

BIRDS MENTIONED…

TUNDRA BEAN-GOOSE | Hooded Merganser | Yellow-billed Cuckoo | Black Swift | Solitary Sandpiper | Craveri’s Murrelet | Yellow-crowned Night-Heron | Red-eyed Vireo

This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for July 14, 2023.

The TUNDRA BEAN-GOOSE continued at Apollo Park near Lancaster through July 8.  It was then found at Earvin Magic Johnson Recreation Area in Willowbrook on July 13 and seen through the next day.  The method of conveyance of this now very approachable goose- potentially human assisted- to the latter location is questionable, given that the bird had a wing injury and was also molting its flight feathers.

A HOODED MERGANSER continued at Ken Malloy Harbor Regional Park in Harbor City through July 11.

A YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO was in Solstice Canyon in Malibu on July 12 by the Dry Canyon trailhead.

Up to three BLACK SWIFTS were in the vicinity of Claremont Wilderness Park along Cobal Canyon Road (by the bench) from July 2-9.  Late afternoon is the best time to look for them here.

A SOLITARY SANDPIPER was at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB (letter of permission required for entry) from July 8-9.

Six CRAVERI’S MURRELETS were east of Santa Catalina Island on July 9.

Increasing in number, YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were at Ballona Lagoon, Sims Bio Pond, Marine Stadium at Alamitos Bay and along the San Gabriel River near the Pacific Coast Highway crossing this past week.

The RED-EYED VIREO at Rio de Los Angeles Park was last reported on July 10.  The bird was usually seen at the north end of the park near the restrooms, but also south of there by the ballfield.  If still present the bird is very vocal.
