This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for May 17, 2023.

The TUNDRA BEAN-GOOSE in the Antelope Valley continued, relocating to Apollo Park from May 8-17.

The LONG-TAILED DUCK continued at the Ballona Creek mouth through May 13.

Seven RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS were at Quail Lake on May 10, with one continuing through May 15.

An INCA DOVE was in Lake Los Angeles through May 7 along 169th Street East.

A HERRING GULL was at MacArthur Park in Los Angeles from May 8-12.

Three CATTLE EGRETS were at Malibu Lagoon on May 12.

At least two YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS continued at Ballona Lagoon in Marina del Rey through May 16.

Three more YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were at Sims Bio Pond in Long Beach on May 9.

A BROAD-WINGED HAWK was seen at Bear Divide near Santa Clarita on May 14.

A late MERLIN was along Gorman Post Road on May 7.

The TROPICAL KINGBIRD along the lower Los Angeles River below Willow Street continued through May 4.

PURPLE MARTINS included two along Gorman Post Road on May 6, one at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB (letter of permission required) on May 8, one at Bear Divide on May 9, one at Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena on May 13 and one at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas on May 15. 

A GRAY CATBIRD was at Willow Springs Park in Long Beach on May 16 along the cemetery north side wall.  It could not be relocated the following day.

A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was near Gorman on May 7 as was a SWAMP SPARROW on May 14.

A NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH was at Ken Malloy Harbor Regional Park in Harbor City on May 5 near the southeast corner drain.

A BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER was on Santa Catalina Island (Bulrush Canyon) on May 7.

A NORTHERN PARULA was at Descanso Gardens in La Canada on May 13.

An INDIGO BUNTING was at the north side trails (adjacent to Hilltop Park) in Signal Hill on May 14 and a RODE-BREASTED GROSBEAK was there from May 15-16.

A ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK and a TENNESSEE WARBLER were on San Clemente Island (no public access) on May 16.
