Los Angeles Audubon Society stands with the Black community and calls for justice in the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and countless others.
If one of our community cannot breathe, we cannot breathe, and the Earth cannot breathe. The recent events of Black Americans being harassed and losing their lives through our collective, institutional racism and societal inaction cannot, and must not continue.
We embrace the diversity of our city and encourage all people to participate in the joys of nature, and all of society, without fear. Institutional racism results in environmental inequities for all people of color, from greater pollution in communities of color, to fewer parks and less natural open space.
Los Angeles Audubon Society just celebrated our 13th year leading environmental education programs for under-resourced youth and their communities in the urban core. Most of our environmental education staff started with us as program participants from urban high schools, and now, after college, are working as Los Angeles Audubon to motivate a new generation of environmental stewards that reflect the diversity of our city.
We recognize that birding and bird conservation historically have been almost exclusively White spaces. Through our programs over the last 13 years we have been committed to training a generation of leaders and role models who are changing this. Our focus is reflected in our strategic plan and spending priorities.
