This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for August 2, 2024.
Up to five BLACK SWIFTS were along Cobal Canyon Road above Claremont on July 28. Late afternoon is the best time to search for them there.
An immature LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL continued along the Los Angeles River at the east end of 26th Street in Vernon through August 1.
A COMMON TERN was at Dockweiler State Beach in El Segundo on August 1.
A MANX SHEARWATER was offshore south of Long Beach on July 27.
WESTERN CATTLE EGRETS were along the Los Angeles River at Willow Street in Long Beach on July 30 and at the Ballona Salt Pan (Playa del Rey) on August 1.
A BALD EAGLE was in the Ballona area (Playa del Rey) on July 28.
The continuing YELLOW-HEADED CARACARA was reported in Lomita around the Target parking lot at Narbonne Ave. and PCH through July 31. It has also been seen near Cabrillo Beach.
A HAMMOND’S FLYCATCHER was at Big Rock Campground along Big Rock Creek near Valyermo on July 28.
A RED-EYED VIREO was along San Francisquito Canyon Road on July 31. Google Earth coordinates 34.5491, -118.5111
Two PURPLE MARTINS were at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas on August 1, with one remaining on August 2.
A “Black-backed” WHITE WAGTAIL continued along the Los Angeles River just above the Rosecrans Ave. in Paramount through July 31. This bird spends much of its time in the structure of the pipe bridge just upstream from Rosecrans, returning to the riverbed to forage periodically. Access is from Ralph Dills Park (if access gates are open) or from Rosecrans via Orange Ave.
A BLACK-THROATED SPARROW was at Walgrove Elementary School in Los Angeles on July 26.
A LUCY’S WARBLER was at Quail Lake near Gorman on July 28 along the south shore near the west end.
The TROPICAL PARULA continued near the Switzer Picnic Area in the San Gabriel Mountains through August 2. It has been by the first stream crossing about one quarter mile downstream from the parking area. It sings occasionally but can be difficult to locate.
