This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for 23 December 2022. 

Seven MOUNTAIN PLOVERS were in the Antelope Valley east of 90th Street East and Avenue F on December 17.

Up to two LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS continued at MacArthur Park in Los Angeles through December 22.

Another LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was at Malibu Lagoon on December 18.

A PACIFIC LOON was at a reservoir in Encino on December 17.

This past week NEOTROPIC CORMORANTS were at Legg Lake in South El Monte, at Belvedere Park in East Los Angeles, at Heritage Park in Cerritos, along the San Gabriel River at Peck Road and below Washington Blvd. and at the Westlake Marina.

Up to eleven YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS continued at Ballona Lagoon and just east of there in Marina del Rey through December 22. 

A ZONE-TAILED HAWK was at San Jose Creek in South El Monte on December 17.

A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER continued at Veteran’s Park in Sylmar through December 17.

A TROPICAL KINGBIRD continued at Bixby Park in Long Beach through December 18.

PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHERS continued by Berkshire Creek at Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena through December 17 and by the small north shore pond at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas through December 17. 

A HAMMOND’S FLYCATCHER continued by the small north shore pond at Bonelli Regional Park through December 21.  Others were at Legg Lake in South El Monte on December 17 and at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood on December 17.

An EASTERN PHOEBE continued at Lake Lindero in Agoura Hills through December 18 and one was along the stream at Malibu Creek State Park on December 18.

A WARBLING VIREO was at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood on December 17.

Another PACIFIC WREN continued at Temescal Gateway Park in Pacific Palisades through December 20 in the southwest corner by the first footbridge.

The SEDGE WREN at the Piute Ponds (east of Duckbill Lake) was reported there through December 22.  A letter of permission is required for entry.

A GRAY CATBIRD was along the east fence line at Tierra Bonita Park in Lancaster on December 17.

A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was at Skytower Park in Palmdale on December 17.

A DARK-EYED “GRAY-HEADED” JUNCO continued at Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena through December 21 around the west side sports field.  Another was at King Gillette Ranch near Calabasas on December 18.

A DARK-EYED “PINK-SIDED” JUNCO continued at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas in the Sailboat Cove area through December 20.

Five WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS were reported this past week.

Up to four SWAMP SPARROWS were at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas through December 22 by the small north shore pond and elsewhere along the north shore.

Another SWAMP SPARROW continued at Colorado Lagoon in Long Beach through December 17 and one was at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB (letter of permission required) on December 22.

HOODED ORIOLES were at the Huntington Gardens in San Marino (north end of the desert garden) on December 17 and along the Los Angeles River in Atwater Village on December 21.

A BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER continued at Bonelli Regional Park along the north shore through December 22.

Another BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER was at Hopkins Wilderness Park in Redondo Beach (in the camp area) on December 18.

A TENNESSEE WARBLER was at Stearns Champions Park in Long Beach on December 17.

A NASHVILLE WARBLER was at Maywood Riverfront Park on December 22.

Two AMERICAN REDSTARTS were at Reseda Park on December 17 and another was in the southeast part of Rancho Los Alamitos on December 17.

A CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER was along the south shore of the south lake at Peck Road Water Conservation Park in Arcadia on December 17.

A PALM WARBLER continued at Avila Park in Long Beach (along the Los Angeles River below Willow Street) through December 20.

The PAINTED REDSTART near Birdcage Park / along Clipperton Lane in Long Beach continued through December 22.

SUMMER TANAGERS were at Stearns Champions Park in Long Beach on December 17, at Johnson Lake in Pasadena on December 17, in Santa Monica on December 18 and at Bonelli Regional Park through December 20 near Picnic Area 3.
