This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for October 2.

A EURASIAN WIGEON was along the lower Los Angeles River at Willow Street in Long Beach on September 29.

A WHITE-WINGED DOVE was at 22nd Street Park in San Pedro on September 30.

The PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER along lower Ballona Creek continued through September 26 generally near the UCLA boat ramp.

Four STILT SANDPIPERS continued along the Los Angeles River in the Vernon/Maywood area through September 28.  They were a hundred yards or so above the Slauson crossing.

One or two YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS continued at the Ballona Freshwater Marsh through September 29.

A BROAD-WINGED HAWK was at Ken Malloy Harbor Regional Park in Harbor City on September 26 in the northeast willows along the drainage channel.  Others were over Claremont on September 27 and over the Los Feliz area on September 30.

The ZONE-TAILED HAWK in Monrovia was seen through September 30 near Grand Ave. Park.

A SHORT-EARED OWL was seen over the Ballona Wetlands on September 30.

TROPICAL KINGBIRDS were at Ken Malloy Harbor Regional Park in Harbor City on September 26 (along the golf course fence line east of Lake Machado), at Colorado Lagoon in Long Beach on September 28 and at Entradero Park in Torrance from September 29-30.

A LEAST FLYCATCHER was at Avalon on Santa Catalina Island on September 26.

A PURPLE MARTIN was at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB on September 27.  As always, a letter of permission is required to enter.  A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was there on September 29.

A WHITE WAGTAIL was along the lower Los Angeles River in Long Beach from September 27-28 above the Willow Street crossing.  There have been no subsequent reports.

A RED-THROATED PIPIT was on San Clemente Island on October 1.

A GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was in the southeast part of the basin at Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena from September 26-27.

Another GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was at the Toyon Landfill area in Griffith Park on October 1.

CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS were on the west side of Hansen Dam near the lower parking area on September 27, at the Sepulveda Basin in Van Nuys on September 26, at Victory Park in Pasadena from September 27-October 1, at the South Coast Botanic Garden in Rolling Hills Estates on September 28, at Loma Alta Park in Altadena on September 29 and at Colorado Lagoon in Long Beach on October 1.

DARK-EYED “GRAY-HEADED” JUNCOS were at Piute Ponds from September 30-October 1 and at Stephen Sorenson Park in Lake Los Angeles on October 1.

NORTHERN WATERTHRUSHES were at Big Dalton Canyon above Glendora on September 23 in the wetlands area at the south end of DeForest Park in Long Beach from September 26-28 and in Lower Arroyo Park by the small dam near the Colorado Street bridge on September 26.

A BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER was at Banning Park in Wilmington from September 27-October 1 in a ficus tree on the north side of the fenced area. 

Other BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS were in the east Antelope Valley on September 30, at Gwinn Park in Pasadena (near the southeast corner) from September 30-October 1 and on San Clemente Island on September 28.

A TENNESSEE WABRBLER was at Arcadia County Park on September 27.

A female type AMERICAN REDSTART was at the Playa Vista Riparian Corridor on September 26 across the creek from Discovery Park.

A NORTHERN PARULA was at Lower Arroyo Park in Pasadena on September 28.  It was along the stream between the Colorado Street bridge and 134 Freeway.

A PALM WARBLER was at Malibu Bluffs Park on September 26.  A GRAY CATBIRD was found here on September 27 and a GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was present on September 28.

A SUMMER TANAGER was at Heartwell Park in Long Beach on September 25 and another was at Burton Chase County Park in Marina del Rey on October 1.

A ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK continued at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood from September 25-26.  It was in trees along the river opposite the Los Coyotes Diagonal (street) entrance.
