This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for January 16.

A "EURASIAN" GREEN-WINGED TEAL was at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera from January 9-12.

A BARROW'S GOLDENEYE has been along the California Aqueduct in the Antelope Valley from January 9-15.  It has been seen between 72nd Street East and 82nd Street East.

AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS were at Royal Palms Beach in San Pedro on January 10 and on the breakwater at the Ballona Creek mouth in Playa del Rey on January 15.

The PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER along lower Ballona Creek was seen through January 15.  Park at the end of Pacific Ave in Playa del Rey and head north over the bridge to the far (north) side of the channel.  Walk upstream and watch for the bird at or near the UCLA boat ramp.  However, the bird has been ranging up Ballona Creek as far as the 90 Freeway.

A handful of MOUNTAIN PLOVERS continued in the Antelope Valley through January 13 with up to thirty being seen. They have been at the A&G Sod Farm at 50th Street East and Avenue N. Remember that most of the land here is private property. Bird from the roadside only.

A NEOTROPIC CORMORANT continued at Peck Road Water Conservation Park (usually on the south lake) in Arcadia through January 15. 

An AMERICAN BITTERN was at the Dominguez Gap Wetlands in Long Beach on January 10.

The immature LITTLE BLUE HERON at the Cabrillo / Salinas de San Pedro Salt Marsh in San Pedro was present through January 15.

The BROAD-WINGED HAWK at the South Coast Botanic Garden in Rilling Hills Estates was seen through January 13. It moves around the area, but the dry pond seems to be a good place to start looking.

A SWAINSON'S HAWK was at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City on January 7.

Another SWAINSON'S HAWK was at Hopkins Wilderness Park in Redondo Beach on January 10.

The ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK near Gorman continued through January 14. It is now regularly being seen from Ralph's Ranch Road where it parallels the 5 Freeway south of Gorman.

A SHORT-EARED OWL was at the South Coast Botanic Garden on January 15.

A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was at Ganesha Park in Pomona on January 7.

Another YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER continued at the South Coast Botanic Garden in Rolling Hills Estates through January 14. It was last seen near the southwest corner of the SCBG.

A NORTHERN "YELLOW-SHAFTED" FLICKER was at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas on January 15 near the north shore between Group Picnic Area 3 and 4.

A GREATER PEWEE has been at Lacy Park in San Marino from January 8-15. It has been seen at various places around the perimeter of the sports field.

The DUSKY-CAPPED FLYCATCHER at Heartwell Park in Long Beach was seen through January 8. It has been on the west side of Woodruff Ave. near the south side of the park.

An ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER continued at Madrona Marsh in Torrance through January 15. It was last seen in the northwest corner of the preserve. A WESTERN KINGBIRD continued here through January 8.

The BROWN-CRESTED FLYCATCHER continued at the South Coast Botanic Garden in Rolling Hills Estates through January 13 around the dry pond. A BELL'S VIREO also continued here through January 10.

The BROWN-CRESTED FLYCATCHER at Michigan Park in Whittier was seen through January 4 near the parking lot. It was seen in the residential area just west of the park on January 11.

The TROPICAL KINGBIRD continued around the pond at Entradero Park in Torrance through January 15.

Another TROPICAL KINGBIRD was found along Ballona Creek at Milton Street Park on January 13.

A SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER was at the Ballona Freshwater Marsh from January 14-15.

A DUSKY FLYCATCHER continued at Willow Springs Park in Long Beach through January 10.

Another DUSKY FLYCATCHER continued at Stephen Sorenson Park in Lake Los Angeles through January 10.

The PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHER continued at the South Coast Botanic Garden in Rolling Hills Estates north around the pond through January 13.

The EASTERN PHOEBE at the Bette Davis Picnic Area in Glendale was reported through January 14. It is being seen on the north side of the Los Angeles River, usually just east of the Riverside Drive crossing. It may be seen in the park area proper or between there and the river channel.

The EASTERN PHOEBE continued at the Rolling Hills Landfill Loop in Rolling Hills Estates near the equestrian center stables through January 10. A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW also continued in the same area through January 10.

CASSIN'S VIREOS were at City of Hope in Duarte on January 9 and continuing at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera through January 9 (on the west side of the basin, close to the end of Mines Ave.).

Another CASSIN'S VIREO was in Lakewood on January 15.

The japonicus type AMERICAN PIPIT continued at the Ferraro Soccer Fields in Glendale through January 15.

The GRASSHOPPER SPARROW at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera continued through January 15. It has been at the large north basin along the east side berm (north of and across from the Mines Ave. entrance).

At least one of two CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS at Griffith Manor Park in Glendale through January 14. Another continued at Cheviot Hills Park through January 15.

DARK-EYED "PINK-SIDED" JUNCOS continued at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas through January 12 (near Sailboat Cove) and at College Park in Claremont through January 15.

DARK-EYED "GRAY-HEADED" JUNCOS were at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas through January 14, at College Park in Claremont through January 15, and at Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena through January 10. Another was at Mar Vista Recreation Center on January 10.

WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS continued near the dog park at Horsethief Canyon Park in San Dimas through January 11 and at Ken Malloy Harbor Regional Park in Harbor City through January 8.

The SWAMP SPARROW along the Los Angeles River in Glendale continued through January 11. It has been in the riverbed vegetation adjacent to the Bette Davis Picnic Area, below the Riverside crossing.

The GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE continued at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood through January 15 near the Los Coyotes entrance.

Another GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE continued at Sims Bio Pond in Long Beach through January 11 (along the east border of the property).

Two YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS were at the Ballona Freshwater Marsh on January 15.

The BALTIMORE ORIOLE at the South Coast Botanic Garden in Rolling Hills Estates continued through January 14 in coral trees by the entrance. A HOODED ORIOLE was at the same spot on January 15.
A SCOTT'S ORIOLE continued near the Crystalaire Country Club in Llano through January 14.
Another SCOTT'S ORIOLE was found at the Huntington Gardens in San Marino on January 9 (in the desert garden).

BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS continued at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood through January 12, in the willows at Madrona Marsh in Torrance through January 14, at Hopkins Wilderness Park in Redondo Beach through January 12 and at Lacy Park in San Marino through January 14.

The AMERICAN REDSTART at Polliwog Park in Manhattan Beach continued through January 13 in trees by the dog park near the botanical garden.

A PALM WARBLER continued at the San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds in Pico Rivera through January 13, west of the Mines Ave. entrance.

Another PALM WARBLER continued at the West San Gabriel River Parkway Nature Trail in Lakewood through January 13.

The PAINTED REDSTART at Inglewood Park Cemetery in Inglewood was reported through January 13. It has been frequenting an oak tree by the south side of the Pinecrest section, south of the pond.
