BIRDS MENTIONED…

Red Knot | South Polar Skua | Bald Eagle | YELLOW-HEADED CARACARA | White Wagtail (Black-backed) | TROPICAL PARULA

This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for July 26, 2024.

A RED KNOT was along lower Ballona Creek near Playa del Rey on July 24.  It was also seen on the nearby salt pan upstream from Pacific Ave.

A SOUTH POLAR SKUA was southeast of San Clemente Island on July 19.

A BALD EAGLE was at the Piute Ponds on Edwards AFB (letter of permission required for access) on July 21.

The continuing YELLOW-HEADED CARACARA was reported in Cabrillo Beach on July 23-25.  Google Earth coordinates area 33.7095, -118.2854.  For weeks it has been hanging around the Target parking lot at Narbonne Ave. and PCH in Lomita.  It was last reported there on July 23. 

A “Black-backed” WHITE WAGTAIL continued along the Los Angeles River just above the Rosecrans Ave. in Paramount through July 25.  This bird spends much of its time in the structure of the pipe bridge just upstream from Rosecrans, returning to the riverbed to forage periodically.  Access is from Ralph Dills Park (if access gates are open) or from Rosecrans via Orange Ave.

The TROPICAL PARULA continued near the Switzer Picnic Area in the San Gabriel Mountains through July 25.  It has been by the first stream crossing about one quarter mile downstream from the parking area.
